How to: connect to an IP adress (December 28, 2007, 02:14:06 PM) quote

How to: connect to an IP address

You've seen them everywhere: IP addresses of a game server. And, you don't know how to connect to them.

For instance, you've received the IP address of a TF2 server from a friend. If you can't use Steam's 'join game' command, you'll have to use that game's console to connect to it. Here's how.

Open the game and go to the options. Then click the 'Advanced' button, tick the 'Enable developer console' checkbox and click 'OK'. Press the console button (standard '~'). You'll see a bunch of text in a window. Type the following: connect *IP address*, where *IP address* is the IP you want to connect to. Here's an example:

127.0.0.1: This is not a real server, but a loopback address. You will connect to yourself if you click the submit button!

When you've done that, better disable the developer console if you don't need it for anything else (like developing or something). This screen will also pop up in-game if you have the developer console enabled.
Hope that helps! Drop a reply here if you still encounter problems with connecting to IP's.
